The image of Sigynâs turned back dances at the forefront of Amyâs mind. She can feel the way Lokiâs stomach turned to lead as Sigyn did ... Was that the beginning of the end? Or the first time Loki noticed how deep the cracks were?
âHeâs easy on the eyes, thatâs for sure,â says Beatrice. Sheâs peering through the window on Steveâs door. Despite herself Amy looks.
Nari is talking to Henry, his back to them. Lokiâs son is wearing dark jeans and a gray v-neck sweater. Both fit him perfectlyâor maybe he fits them perfectly. She draws back. The sort of guy who would have nothing to do with her, sheâs not all that and ...
Amy blinks. Her face flushes, and sheâs suddenly struck by a memory of Loki sitting at Hoenirâs table, casually eating a rack of lamb. Loki was about seventeen. Waving a rib he said, âHoenir, could you turn me into a woman?â
Where he was sitting across the table, Hoenir spit out his tea.
Propped up on the counter edge, Mimir said, âErrrr ⦠Loki, what brings this on?â
Loki bit a piece of meat from the bone, barely pausing to chew it before he swallowed it down. âIt just seems like itâs so much easier for women to have sex.â
Hoenir went bright red and started coughing.
Loki continued. âIf youâre a woman, all you need is the barest minimum of looks and hygiene and you can have sex with just about any man.â
âWould you marry just about any woman?â Mimir said, raising an eyebrow.
Loki drew back in his seat. âNo.â Pointing a finger, he said, âDonât be offensive, Mimir. Weâre just talking about sex here.â
Recovering from his coughing fit, Hoenir rolled his eyes.
âAnd youâd have sex with anyone,â said Mimir with a sigh.
âNo â¦â Loki tapped his chin. âWell ⦠almost. But I wouldnât marry just anyone ⦠â He shrugged and feigned an air of indifference. âIf I ever get married at all.â
Amy feels her skin go hot. Sheâs flustered by Lokiâs flippancy and shallowness, and then she blinks, remembering Anganboða. When he first laid eyes on her Loki thought she was the most beautiful woman heâd ever seen. But that isnât why he fell in love with her. He loved her because she laughed at his jokes, but knew he was more than a fool; she saw through Baldurâs illusions, and she was smart and loved magic.
Amy looks toward the nursing station where they first saw Sigyn. Sigyn is beautiful, but on Asgard her looks arenât special. Loki loved her because she loved Helen, and for her strength of willâher willingness to stand up to him, stand up for him and his children, and her wisdom and perseverance.
Amy takes a step back, memories flooding her mind. Loki wasnât an outlier. When it came to love, men required a certain level of health, but beauty was subjective, and usually it wasnât really what made men fall. A lot of times they just wanted to be with women who genuinely liked them.
